Established in the 1870’s by a grain farmer, Turlock quickly became a bustling community of merchants and saloons. In the early-20th century, Turlock's population diversified as several cultural groups came to the region. These residents created a balanced workforce that would allow Turlock to develop agriculturally and commercially. Agriculture became a strong part of the economy, and still is today, but Turlock's location and lifestyle have attracted commercial businesses as well.
Today, Turlock's historic downtown is reminiscent of the community's earlier days. Renovated to recapture its historic charm, the downtown area is home to an eclectic array of shops and cafés. The relaxing, main street feel of downtown attracts locals and visitors looking for that perfect antique or just making the most of their free time.
Other unique Turlock attractions include the Blaker Antique Clock and Auto Collection, Turlock Historical Museum, Lawton Doll Company and the Beekham farm. The city is also centrally located to premier tourist attractions in California and Nevada: Lake Tahoe, San Francisco Bay, Yosemite National Park and Monterey are all within 200 miles.
Turlock residents enjoy the sunny, dry climate that has made California so popular with homebuyers. In May through September, the sun shines about 94% of the time. Year-round temperatures in Turlock range from July highs in the mid-90s to December lows in the high-30s. Annual rainfall averages less than 13 inches, and the majority of this occurs in January through March. Snowfall is rare.
